MUET

Now that I've gotten all that shit out of my system, I just realised that I have MUET test somewhere in April, and I have no idea what the format is like. :(

I need a Band 4 to avoid resitting, and apparently the stupid oral is damn complicated. You don't talk, they tolak markah. You talk too much, they tolak markah also.

Whoop-de-fucking-doo.

Off to play The Sims.

Anything less than a band 6 for you would be an injustice. And trust me, there is no way you're getting a band 4!
Out of curiousity, why are you taking the MUET anyway?

Remember SPM's English exam? Just try to memorize the essay formats (format letter, etc) and I bet you would do just fine for your essay exam. The rest isnt really that tough.

The MUET oral should be fine for you, Saffy... If I did it, I'm sure you can, considering you're more extroverted than I am... For me, I had to make an effort to actually talk enough and clearly enough... But like you said, not too much, not too little... I think the important thing is to not be silent as a mouse, nor to talk so much that nobody else has a chance to talk... If I'm not mistaken, it's a group oral with about 4 people where you discuss a topic... At least it was for me...

Also, the MUET is extremely easy, so you should be fine... Just remember one thing... There's a reason I got Band 5 and not Band 6... I learned my lesson... NEVER GET HUNG UP OVER BAD ENGLISH IN THE EXAM PAPER ITSELF... My problem was I couldn't decide which answers were best, because they all looked bad to me... If the english is bad (it was for my paper... Oh, the HORROR... *sob sob*) think what's closest and what they expect of you... Just warning you, because when I took mine, I was stuck with answers (objective) that were:

(A) {bad english here}
(B) {slightly worse english here}
(C) {even worse english here}
(D) {worst english here}

So just treat it like moral and give what they want... I'm sure you already know all this... :p Plus, you shouldn't have any problems, since you're most probably not as obsessive and compulsive as I am (I'm so dysfunctional... *sob sob* :p)... Okay, so now you know why I didn't take the MENSA test (It's timed, and I obsess too much)... Isn't it a wonder of the world how I ever completed my highschool exams? ;)

My combination of "...", "(", ")", "*", ":p" and ";)" is rather confusing, no? :p

Hopefully your paper will be in good and proper english though... It's not all that bad... I was just emphasizing my point that you cannot expect it too be all perfect, because it most probably isn't... It's the MUET (Malaysian english paper)... You can't expect it to be of Singaporean standard... Like you, I tend to exaggerate when making a point, so don't fret about it... I figured it was time for revenge anyway, seeing how many times you've exaggerated... :p

As for format, when I did it, it was quite a lot like a normal english paper... You know those highschool papers we used to take... Fill in the blanks, word selection, comprehension, etc... There's also the dictation part where they tell you some string of facts, like a paragraph out of a book, and you have to memorize that, because then they ask you questions... Nothing you haven't done before... ;)

Well, that's all from what I can surprisingly still remember about the MUET...

Sims don't actually talk good english now do they :P

Can't be much of a help though since Muet predated my time.

If you talk the way you write, or if you write the way you talk, it is still safe for you to go play The Sims until the day before the exam. :D

@Janus:
Wah, don't la say like that. Nanti kena jinxed. :)

I'm taking it because it's a required item for my Mass Comm studies. We have to do English in the next semester, so I'm really pushing it by only taking the exam in April, heheh.

@Hallaj:
SPM...I think I have cousins doing that this year. Will borrow essay questions from them to have a look-see. Thanks for reading, and for the suggestion. :)

@Seanna:
I don't speak very well. I can write, but I can't speak very well, unless it's bahasa pasar.

Hopefully can pass ler, I don't have high expectations. *grins*

Thanks for the info ler, very educational.

@Bawang:
Haha, you're right, they speak gibberish. :)

Pre-dated my time too, but we still have to take it. Bleah.

@Narrowband:
Whoa, engineer pun kena MUET? Thanks for the faith. :)

@A.
You don't speak good English, you speak terrific English. There's a fine line. :)

@Belacan:
Cannot. Later all the OMFG STFU n00bz0r come out then I will fail. :(

@IBlogMe:
I do neither. :( I write way better than I talk, but I'll still play the Sims until a day before my exams.

Can't study for a language test. Thank god, hahaha. Don't wanna screw up my break by studying.

@Silence:
Smile at the other participants or at the examiner?

Good points there, I will try to follow if I don't panic too much. :) Thanks dearie.

Should be like me la... Hmmmph! *nose in air* :p I switch the level of my language, plus my accent accordingly, depending on whom I'm talking to...

For the oral, try this:

1. Listen

2. Make your points politely. Don't stay silent

3. Listen and hear the others out

4. Agree with good points and/or politely disagree with what you feel are bad points

5. Meet the others in the middle if their points oppose your points and everyone insists on their own points. This will make you look better, since you're able to offer a common ground

6. Do NOT take too much time, otherwise the others won't have enough time to talk. However, don't rush

7. Always be polite and sincere
